Finding affirming healthcare providers

Where to look and what questions to ask when searching for safe care.

Finding an affirming provider may take time, but it is worth the effort. Start by asking trusted friends, family members, or LGBTQ community members for recommendations. They can share their own experiences and tell you which providers were respectful. LGBTQ organizations often maintain lists of recommended providers or can give referrals based on your needs. When calling to schedule an appointment, you can ask brief questions like Do you have experience working with LGBTQ patients? or How do you handle pronouns and name changes? Listen to how they respond. If they seem defensive, dismissive, or confused, that is a sign they may not be a good fit. Some providers will ask you to fill out forms that allow you to specify your pronouns, chosen name, and sexual orientation. This is a good sign. Check online reviews that mention LGBTQ care. Look for words like affirming, respectful, non-judgmental, knowledgeable about sexual health, and culturally competent. Be cautious of reviews that mention feeling judged or having to educate the provider about basic LGBTQ concepts. Online directories for LGBTQ providers are maintained by some organizations. You might also ask about the demographic makeup of the provider's client population, whether the office staff is trained in LGTBQ cultural competency, and whether the clinic maintains privacy for LGBTQ patients. Some clinics display LGBTQ affirming symbols or language on their websites, which can indicate a commitment to welcoming LGBTQ people. Trust your instincts. If you don't feel comfortable with a provider from your first interaction, it's okay to keep looking.
