Nourishing your body with food and movement

Eating well and moving your body without diet culture or toxic exercise culture.

Nourishing your body means eating food that tastes good and makes you feel good. It means eating enough to feel satisfied and energized. Diet culture teaches us to eat less, exercise more, and prioritize thinness. But bodies come in different shapes and sizes, and thinness is not the same as health. You deserve to eat without guilt. Different foods provide different nutrition. A mix of vegetables, fruits, grains, protein, and healthy fats supports your body's functions. But also, cookies and pizza are fine. Food for enjoyment and celebration is also part of a healthy relationship with eating. If you have a history of disordered eating or complicated feelings about food, a dietitian specializing in eating disorders or intuitive eating can help. Movement feels good in different ways for different people. Some people love running or intense exercise. Others prefer gentle yoga, walking, dancing, or swimming. Some people don't enjoy exercise but do enjoy moving their body through play or daily activities. The point is to move in ways that feel good, not to punish yourself or look a certain way. Toxic exercise culture tells you to exercise to earn food, to burn off calories, or to reshape your body. Healthy movement is about how it makes you feel, strength, endurance, joy, or stress relief. If exercise feels like punishment or obligation, that is not healthy. Find movement that brings you joy or at least doesn't make you miserable. Your body deserves to move in ways that feel good.
